In 1906 Hurricane #8 wreaked havoc throughout its path. The most severe damage was caused in Florida. On the evening of October 17, 1906, the weather started to close in. By morning the railroad had suffered a staggering setback. One hundred and thirty men were known to have perished and more than 70 people were drowned near Elliott Key after two steamers sank. Despite the hardships, Flagler’s dedication and perseverance saw the final link of the Florida East Coast Railway completed in 1912. Our Hurricane #8 like that of 1906 is a force to be reckoned with. With its deep mahogany brown to almost black appearance this beer is meant for sipping in a nice brandy snifter. The high ABV lingers on the back of the throat creating a warmth best experienced on a cold Florida winter’s night. Do not look for hops, the malt overtakes any remnant of spice and citrus of the Hallertauer Mittelfrüh hops. Hurricane #8 is a beer best paired with strong robust cheeses such as Gouda and Brie or paired with substantial foods such as roast pork and a chocolate cheesecake with blueberry reduction. Whether you choose to enjoy this immediately or let it age a few years, remember the brave 135 and see if you make it through Two Henrys Hurricane #8!!!!
